MASHHAD

Mashhad is the capital city of Khorasan-e Razavi Province, Iran and located in the northeast of the Iran near the borders of Afghanistan and Turkmenistan. The shrine of Imam Reza, 8th Shia Imam situated in Iran.

Brief Introduction

Mashhad is the second most populous and also, the first holy city in Iran. It was the capital of Iran in the reign of the Afsharid kings (1736–1796). Literally, the word “Mashhad” means “the place of martyrdom” and it gained this name because the 8th Shia Imam was martyred and buried in this area. Mashhad was an important transit city along the Silk Road.

Ferdowsi (also spelled Firdausi) was one of the greatest poets in the history of Iran. He was the author of Shahnameh, the world’s longest epic poem written by a single poet, which contains about 60,000 verses. Firdausi’s tomb is in the city of Tus, 40 Km from Mashhad.
